I was pleasantly surprised because at 10pm everything stops and that busy place suddenly becomes quiet. having a room on the street, I was afraid I would have been not able to sleep well and it looked they were working, walking and eating non-stop. all the rooms have a little balcony, with a bench where you can seat and enjoy people passing by and watch the restaurants full of people any time of the day, on the small alleys below. it is located in the middle of the pedestrian area (there are a few, actually), with small stalls and shops which start to operate at 8 in the morning and stop at 10pm. there are a lot of small and cozy hotels, which are clean and spacious enough and offer you a pleasant stay. Living in china helps you to better consider which kind of hotel you want to sleep in, when you travel in this country. If charm means a filthy bathroom and pieces of traditional furniture lined against the wall in the room, I choose faceless, clean efficiency. I can't understand how they came to be rated No.1 of more than a thousand in the whole of Chengdu?!!. I remember having seen a photo of something similar in another review sometime back n I thought Buddhazen would at least do something to literally clean up their act. Super gross! Had to wait for it to slowly drain and continue showering at just a trickle so it wouldn't pool. Since I was trying hard not to look, before I knew it, I was standing in a pond of soapy scummy water (granted it was my scum) cos the floor trap did not drain. There was black i-don't-know-what on the mosaic shower floor that made me very squeamish and had to make it a point to not look. Part of the window in the bathroom was taped up with broad black duct tape because the wooden window was rotting. I was disgusted when I got to my room ( Rm 316 ) and took a shower. But the hotel itself !! At check in around lunch time (booked online), room was not ready so we left our luggage at the reception & went out till 9pm or so. Liked the setting - Chinese architecture and peaceful surroundings.
